Editorial Reviews

From the Author

The Federal Bureau of Prisons does not have “guards,” all staff who are full time BOP employees are correctional workers first, regardless of the job description. When the call for assistance goes out, staff respond. If you want to get very technical, staff are federal law enforcement officers.Working in the federal system takes a certain kind of person. A federal penitentiary can be a very dangerous place to work.If I was told that I would be working at a federal prison, and retire from the system before I began my career with the BOP, I would have told you, no way in the world would I ever consider the prospect. The 21 years went by like it was last week when the job was started. I used a phrase during my work as a correctional counselor, “We don’t care, and you can’t make us!” and “You ain’t got nothing coming!” The best advice I had was from an old time correctional officer, he told me “Show up on time.” “Just do your job!” On the job you had to be dependable, help staff when needed, and respond to the call for assistance. One other phrase I used was, “There are 28,800 seconds in a 8 hour shift.” During my retirement speech I explained that we as staff need to make each second count doing the job. Hope for the quiet times and prepare for the worst. We had a correctional officer who gave all of his 28,800 seconds trying to save his fellow officers during an assault when he was killed in our main corridor. He was just doing his job. He did not get to go home after his shift. No guns are allowed inside the prison. The most useful tool staff have is the pen and their minds. Use the term, “Common correctional sense.” It is a very different world that outsiders do not get to see much of.This book is about things that actually happened. Names were not used to protect the privacy of staff and inmates. That was done on purpose. The people who were there at the time of each event will know exactly what the story is.Let me give you the ride into the system and return you safe and sound.
